What is encaustic painting? what materials do you need? and where to find
encaustic art.
What drew my attention to encaustic painting was looking at ACEOs on ebay,
ACEOs are small measuring 2.5x3.5 inches but the results with encaustic
wax are amazing, right now with a quick look they seem to be very popular
too.
Encaustic paint is made from pure pigment and a mixture of resin and molten beeswax, this mixture is applied with a heated tool before cooling off to a smooth surface rapidly, many layers can be applied and textures created by scraping.also it's great with collage materials which embed into the hot wax.

R&F Encaustic Paints
Encaustic paints have recently achieved popularity as an alternative to oil and acrylic paints. A very spontaneous and versatile medium, encaustics can be modeled, layered, sculpted, textured, and even combined with collage materials. No drying time is required. The fine quality and exquisite visual properties of R&F Encaustic Paints are owed to the dedicated labor process. R&F carefully mixes pigment, pure beeswax, and damar resin. Each color is heavily pigmented and carefully milled. Because no solvents are used, many health hazards associated with other art materials are eliminated. The beeswax contained in R&F Encaustic Paints makes them impervious to moisture, and thus highly durable. Over time, your art retains all the freshness of a newly finished work. Encaustics are applied molten with a brush and then fused into the painting with a heat source. It is best to use encaustic paints on a rigid and absorbent surface. Work done with encaustics does not need to be varnished or protected by glass. A mild buffing with a soft cloth will bring the surface to a beautiful luster. It also makes a great heated surface for mixing colors. The aluminum plate measures 16" × 16" (406 mm × 406 mm). It is made with a sheet of 3/8" (9.5 mm) thick aluminum steel alloy and has been anodized to prevent discoloration of several of the light pigments. The Heated Palette comes complete with an attached brush holder, adjustable legs, and a heat source. Mixing can be done in sturdy palette cups (sold separately), or directly on the surface.

Use R&F Impasto/Modeling Wax beneath encaustic paints to build up textures and create three dimensional shapes. Impasto/Modeling Wax is a combination of microcrystalline wax and beeswax. The melting point of the Impasto/Modeling Wax is higher than that of encaustic paints, allowing the artist to paint and fuse the encaustic paint over a shape without blunting the sculptural details. Available in two sizes, 104 ml (3.5 oz) and 333 ml (11.3 oz). Not for use on top layers, since it may discolor.

Eco-House 950 Damar Resin
A high-quality, graded natural resin that adds brilliance and luminosity to colors. Clear white crystals are used to make various traditional painting preparations, such as varnish and medium. Strain out impurities using Orange Terpene.
